In their annual tradition, the Dallas Cowboys visited The Salvation Army on Monday, serving an early Thanksgiving meal to hundreds of men, women and children served by the Army’s Carr P. Collins Center in Dallas and Mabee Social Services Center in Fort Worth.
While veteran players and members of the Dallas Cowboys Women’s Association – wives and significant others of Cowboys players, coaches and front office staff – served Dallas, rookie players and rookie Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders took Fort Worth, reaching more than 500 Salvation Army patrons.
For a few Cowboys, it was a family affair, with Jason Witten and his wife Michelle bringing their sons CJ and Cooper along to help, and Tony Romo and his wife Candice bringing their son Hawkins. Gene Jones, wife of Jerry Jones, was thrilled to also have two of her grandchildren, James and Mary Chambers, alongside.
“Yeah, it’s special. This time of year, we’re lucky to really just understand the blessings we have. We’re in a position to hopefully put some smiles on some faces and meet some people,” said Romo. “I think when you have kids, you want to make sure that they understand life and how not everyone is in the same position they’re in. We’re fortunate to be in certain situations, and I just want them to know that it’s bigger than themselves and you want to be humble and have a good heart.”
Despite coming back from a loss in Tampa Bay the day before, there was no shortage of gratitude and cheers for the Cowboys at The Salvation Army.
“It’s encouraging to see that positive feedback, because sometimes that’s not what you expect and when you’ve lost seven in a row and you’re 2-7 to have that support,” said Witten.
Romo agreed.
“People here – Dallas has always rallied around the football team, and we have the best fans,” he said.
Presented by UnitedHealthcare with food donations from Albertsons, the Cowboys’ early Thanksgiving meal serving is a beloved signature event of the Cowboys-Salvation Army partnership. Next week, the team’s Thanksgiving Day game will officially kick off the Army’s iconic holiday fundraiser, the Red Kettle Campaign, with a live, nationally televised halftime performance featuring country music superstar Luke Bryan.
